Kate Shaw, founder and CEO of Innovative Trials, has responded to data that shows the UK has far fewer women-only clinical trials compared to male-only studies. She said: “The current disparity between the number of women-only clinical trials compared to male-only studies is a significant issue that reflects a long-standing tendency for women’s health to be a less prioritised area of research globally, not only in the UK. It’s vital this is addressed so that women’s health receives the attention it deserves in this day and age.

“Greater investment into research focusing on women’s health is badly needed, but this is only part of the answer. Even if more women-only trials were available, recruiting participants is a difficult process and poor enrollment is one of the major factors behind the early termination of studies. The only way to reverse this trend is education. Teaching people, ideally from an early age, about the nature of clinical trials should foster a healthy understanding about their purpose, design and process, address any concerns, misconceptions and questions, and ensure they are able to make informed decisions.”
